The Original Limb Spreader Solution

Limb spreaders position branches to encourage stronger crotch angles so heavily fruit laden branches do not strip off the trunk.  They also allow better light penetration to the center of the tree enabling higher quality fruit.  By starting with a small shoot, and following up with successively larger sizes as the tree grows,  you can create the perfect tree.

The 7 sizes of Twigeeze limb spreaders range from 3” for new shoots and small caliper limbs to 18’ long for mature limbs of larger caliper, designed to assist in training tree limbs and plant shoots to a desired position relative to the central leader, stalk or trunk.  They add the “third leg to the triangle”, and as a result, can adjust the angle of the limb to the tree.  A strong crotch will support far more fruit without damage than a more upright shoot or limb.  Upright limbs can be torn or split from the trunk due to heavy fruiting.  A second benefit of spreading limbs is to increase light penetration into the center of the tree, increasing yield and fruit color.

When we made the first size to replace wooden toothpicks, My neighbor, a large cherry producer in northern Michigan agreed to try my new molded plastic limbspreader.  He had a crew of 7 people charged with the meticulous job of putting in toothpicks to position young shoots to form a central leader system.  He was about halfway through a 10-acre bloc of tart cherries when I showed up with my samples.  They were crude of course, and also happened to be black, not the red that is now our standard color.  I gave him enough to finish his 10-acre block and he came over the next day and wanted to know if I had any more of those “little plastic twiggy things?”

He said he wanted to pay for them, but I did not even have a price.  I said, “How about giving me half of the labor, you saved, and we call it good?”   He said, “Hell no, I am not paying you that much money, I want to buy them outright!” This was the first recorded transaction for those “little twiggy things,” and the birth of the product Twigeeze!

Early production did not have a particular color, and an early complain was that growers wanted to drive through their plantings and see the limbspreaders, so after a bit of experimenting, we settled on our signature red.  We use recycled resin and color with a special color and UV stabilizer.   They are easily recyclable. We sell on Amazon to individuals, but commercial accounts can access one of our dealers or purchase direct from Miller-Creek.  Email inquiries to [email protected]
